From the big box stores to the small boutiques, there are many options for buying children’s clothing, but there isn’t much you can feel good about. Much of kids’ clothing is fast fashion, prone to ripping, and barely lasts when your child needs them. Add in the toys that tend to be primarily plastic, and it becomes easy to see why children’s products tend to be an environmental issue. This is why I adore shops with curated products that let you shop for your little one while feeling good about it. Hatched Boston is a perfect example! This Boston-based store has a wonderful selection of children’s clothing and toys while ensuring they’re supporting brands committed to a positive effect on the world. If you’ve been looking for a fantastic shop for your family, I’d love to tell you all about it!
About Hatched in Boston
Hatched was opened in 2005 by Boston resident Liz Vittori Koch. When Liz had her first baby, she thought about the production of her baby’s clothing. There was such a limited choice of textiles, and it was hard to ensure ethically sourced items. Liz had an extensive background in both art and retail, and she realized she could do something to change this.
She started Hatched so parents would have a space to buy green products for their babies. Hatched became the first store in all of Boston to sell cloth diapers. It also became a go-to for parents seeking organic and sustainable items.
The shop expanded from carrying baby items to carrying products sized up to 10y. The store remains independently owned, even if the business looks a little different these days. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Liz temporarily closed up the storefront in Jamaica Plains with the intention of opening it back up. That summer, she shifted her focus completely to the online shop and did regular pop-ups instead of reopening the brick-and-mortar location.
While you might have more limited opportunities to see the items in person, she’s figured out ways to create a customized shopping experience so you can get the same great service. You can schedule a one-on-one virtual shopping session to see full collections and find the right option for your family. Hatched also provides fast and free delivery to people living in the 02130 zip code.
Liz takes the time to ensure ethics are still the top priority of the business. She works only with brands that align with her beliefs. On top of this, Hatched places the textile information and where the items come from on the product description. When you shop with Hatched, you’ll have access to tons of products you’ll love supporting!
Products
Hatched excels at finding aesthetically gorgeous, ethically produced children’s clothing. All of their clothes are sustainably sourced and made from 100% organic cotton. Most have certification from the Global Organic Textile Standards for their entire production process. This means even babies with highly sensitive skin can be well-dressed!
You’ll be able to find merino wool bonnets, cozy pajamas, and functional bottoms. While you’ll find many lovely neutral shades, the shop is not afraid of bold fashions and whimsical patterns. You can buy button-up shirts with flowers, pinafores with night blooms, and pajamas with beetles. The shop has a large number of options for the cold Boston winters, including cardigans, dresses, and wool leggings.
Their baby clothes include preemie sizes. You’ll find functional rompers, smock dresses, and bodysuits perfect for taking them home from the hospital. They also sell all kinds of accessories, including hats, socks, and colorful bibs.
Hatched seeks out toy brands that use eco-friendly materials and pay their workers well. Most of the toys lean toward the minimalistic to encourage your child’s imagination. From wooden play food to rainbow building boards, you can stock your child’s nursery with lovely toys they can play with for hours. Hatched carries specialty brands, including Grapat, Grimm’s, and Ostheimer. Many of the toys are handcrafted and made with wood. You’ll have one-of-a-kind pieces your child will treasure for years!
Specialty
Hatched sells bedding made with natural fibers that will brighten up your nursery. They have woolen mattress pads that protect your bedding while providing your child with a soft surface. They also have gorgeous quilts and patterned organic muslin swaddle blankets to keep your child warm.
If you’re looking for hands-on crafts with ingredients you’ll love, check out their art section! Many of the products have been created with ingredients such as beeswax, wood, and canvas. Their crafts will keep your child entertained while engaging their imagination. The shop sells crayons in every skin tone, rainbow string for games, wooden beads for bracelets, and kits for making beeswax candles.
They have a great variety of books by authors such as Nikki McClure. Your child will learn all about the hidden magic in the world and feel inspired to interact with life around them.
Even though the shop might not have a physical location anymore, you can still check them out at pop-ups across the city. They focus on working with groups that align with their beliefs. In the past, they’ve appeared at pop-ups from Wake Up the Earth and Grap at Wild, Wild. They also highlight BIPOC women and host virtual events such as Perinatal Groups for under-represented communities. They use their Facebook and Instagram pages to share these events and flash sales, where you can save on incredible items.
