AFA OBGYN was founded in 1994 by Dr. Ingrid Balcomb. After immigrating from Canada, she opened the practice to provide comprehensive women’s healthcare. In the years between opening doors and her retirement in 2019, Dr. Balcomb was an active member (and eventually Chairman) of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff in the OBGYN department. She was also on the Board of Directors of Emerson Hospital. What began as a single-provider practice has ultimately grown into a collaborative practice of Nurse Practitioners, Obstetricians, Gynecologists, and Certified Nurse Midwives.
Each of the AFA OBGYN caregivers has extensive experience in order to provide their patients with the best quality care in the area. Whether you need routine gynecological care, are managing a pregnancy – either low risk or high risk – or need help with fertility or birth control, you’ll find attentive care and listening, compassionate healthcare providers are on your team.
AFA OBGYN has three convenient locations for patients in Concord, Leominster, and Westford, each of which has extended office hours to better accommodate their patients’ busy schedules. Across their three offices, you’ll find a team of 5 physicians, 6 certified nurse midwives, and 2 nurse practitioners. Gynecologic

Obstetrical

They also offer prenatal and childbirth classes in partnership with Emerson Hospital, so you can feel as prepared as possible to welcome your new addition.
Midwifery
In addition to having OBGYNs on staff, AFA OBGYN is also home to a team of experienced Certified Nurse Midwives or CNMs. Nurse midwives have a master’s degree or higher and are required to pass a national certification exam, making them highly educated specialists who can provide healthcare services to women in all stages of life.
Midwives also work with all members of the healthcare team, including physicians, meaning you’ll receive collaborative care with the knowledge of a variety of specialists. Plus, should any high-risk conditions arise, you and your midwife are already working with a team of physicians and experts who can help. When it comes to childbirth, your midwife will help you develop a birth plan and explore your pain relief options, personal needs, and desires for a fulfilling and empowering birth experience.
Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM)
While we all hope for a seamless, easy pregnancy with no complications, MFM specialists are dedicated to helping families with high-risk circumstances and conditions. They specialize in the “screening, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of mothers and babies with a pregnancy that is un-routine or high-risk.” AFA OBGYN works closely with Boston MFM and Emerson MFM Brigham and Women’s physicians to provide exceptional care.
